Review: Ruined Wings

17-Year old track star Callie Novak has been living a charmed life until reality comes crashing down when her twin brother Colton and her father are both killed in an auto accident. When it’s determined that Colton was the driver and under the influence of drugs, Callie goes in search of answers, but the answers just bring further heartbreak.

Soon Callie finds herself on the very same path that led to her brother’s death as she begins to self-medicate as a means to cope, this begins a devastating downward spiral that Callie is helpless to stop. Callie has to dig down deep to find the strength that her brother lacked to turn her life around.

This book is suitable older young adults because it deals with the gritty realities of drug addiction and contains violence, strong language, and sexual exploitation. Ashley Fontainne packs a lot of story into this relatively short, but well-written book. The audiobook is over 3 hours in length and the fully voiced, expressive narration by Andrea Emmes was perfectly suited for the age of the main character and the genre. The sound quality was clear throughout the production.

I look forward to seeing what’s in store for both this author and narrator! This audiobook was gifted to me exchange for an unbiased review!

Review: Worth the Fight

Worth the Fight by L.D. Davis

I was super stoked when I saw that L.D. Davis’ Worth the Fight was finally available in audio form, Worth the Fight is the final audiobook in the Accidentally On Purpose trilogy, and the first audiobook AOP was released 3 ½ years ago. Worth the Fight is Luke Kessler’s story and would I highly suggest you listen the AOP before listening to this book

Luke’s story starts off with my favorite passage from AOP, when a desolate Luke confronts girlfriend Emmy Grayne over her affair with boss Kyle Sterling, it’s the most heartbreaking part of their story and hearing it told from Luke’s POV loses none of its intensity.

We learn what Luke’s been up to since the breakup and before Emmy comes to town and drops a bombshell on is life. This is an emotional listen as Luke and Emmy try to rebuild basic trust and then rebuild their relationship, but it’s not easy because even though a year has passed Luke is still very hurt and Emma has come back into Luke's life a completely broken woman, the harsh words Luke spoke to Emmy when they parted end up coming to fruition in the most painful of way. Realizing just how deeply wounded and depressed Emmy is, Luke comes to the realization that for both their sakes he must help to heal Emmy's heart.

I loved this story and it's a satisfying completion to the AOP series. Joe Arden narrates and he did an awesome job voicing the characters and I found his delivery completely engaging, this audiobook clocks in at almost 11 hours and it went by way too fast, I never wanted to put the story on pause, it’s that entertaining.

Review: Enthrall Secrets

First off, I'm so glad that authors, like Vanessa Fewings, who really know how to tell a story are starting to write erotica, one day soon I hope it becomes so commonplace that I won't be so deliriously happy when I find that rare author in the erotica genre that I like!

This story has suspense, heartbreak and hot sex! The heartbreak was a real surprise for me, I mean I actually teared up at one point In the story and I rarely do that!

Scarlet Winters is a dominatrix at a BDSM club, when she has a scene with reluctant sub Ethan, there's some serious chemistry between these two, but Ethan has ulterior motives. When it all goes terribly south, against her boss Cameron’s wishes she heads to Ethan house to apologize and instead ends up in a fight for her and Ethan's life. While cowering in a back office with an unconscious Ethan, Scarlet flashes back on her life with billionaire Danton Belfort.

This book is the first that I've listened to in the Enthrall series, but it's the seventh book in the series which makes me very happy because that means I have six more audiobooks to put on my list!

The audio quality excellent and the narrator Olivia Hart did a fantastic job, her pacing of the story and voice suit this genre well and I would not hesitate to purchase any book that she's narrating.

Review: Walk Through Fire

When Millie seeks him out to give him "closure" his pent up rage boils over leading to an explosive confrontation, but whenever there are strong feelings involved there's passion also and that hasn't dimmed with time either!

Soon, Millie and Logan's emotions swing wildly from hatred to sexually charged encounters. Millie still finds it painful to tell Logan the real reason she left him and when she finally breaks down and confesses the truth to him all bets are off as Logan tries to heal both their hearts.

Kate Russell performs the narration on this audiobook which in pure KA fashion clocks in at over 17 hours and Kate Russell's reading of each of the many characters in this book is just awesome.

I highly recommend this book and any of the other books in the Chaos series.

Review: The Nightmare Pearl

The Nightmare Pearl by G. Lippert

This is one of those books that defies categorizing, it's part mystery, part ghost story but above all it's a love story. It's two stories told several years apart and intersects at the end.

Adolescent boy David befriends Becca a black girl living in an abandoned culvert in the early seventies, even though she's aloof they almost immediately form a close bond to one another.

Meanwhile in future Sheila an aspiring writer loses her literary agent husband in the collapse of the twin towers during the 2001 terrorist attacks, and she cannot accept the fact that her husband has perished.

How these two stories are told is done so beautifully and with such tenderness. You can't help but be touched by the conclusion.

The only weak part of this book is in the narration, Steve White does an awesome job and I could listen to him read any book! He's just that good. But the production quality of the portion read by Kimberly Meciti is poor and it jarring, especially after the smooth delivery by Steve. Kimberly is a decent narrator, it's just the production that's bad.

Overall though the book still rates 4 stars.

Plan to be amazed!

First off I rarely give a story a 10 rating and I don't take giving one lightly! But, this book is fantastic! What does it take to get a 10? A unique story line, one the evokes deep feelings both negative and positive and this book delivers on all counts! I was expecting a romance, a love story. What I got was so much more! It is a love story of sorts, but not between a woman and man, but rather between a daughter and mother.

Annabel's mother Beatrice is a real piece of work! She a narcissist, she's a cold and indifferent mother and grandmother. Spending only 15 minutes a week touching base with her daughter over the past several years.

Their relationship is so fractured that Annabel even addresses her mother by her given name! I’ve met people like this in real life and from what I’ve witnessed, it all points to the child feeling a disconnect from the parent and in the case of this book it’s no different.

Quite unexpectedly Bea announces that she's getting married and she wants her daughter to help her plan the ultimate wedding! Somewhat reluctantly Annabel agrees to help.

This starts Annabel on a path of discovery, sometimes painfully, learning things about herself and her mother which completely upturn everything she thought she knew about their turbulent past. It’s an awakening of sorts, she learns things along the way that give her a new point of view on practically everyone in her life, her husband, her so called former best friend and her mother.

It’s a story that’s full of emotion, heartbreak and love and the twist at the end caught me completely off guard! I was asking myself what the hell is going on!

This book is well written and the narration by Lisa Beacom was perfection!  and I highly recommend this audiobook. What a very pleasant surprise!

Plan Bea appears to be one of Hilary’s first novel written, If so I'm thoroughly impressed and I can’t wait to see what’s in store from her next!

You know what I really like about LD Davis' writing? That her stories never feel contrived, her characters are realistic and flawed, the things that happen to them, are situations that could happen you or someone you know!

The story centers around Emmy, who works at a law firm as a legal assistant, Emmy is winding down at a local watering hole after a long grueling work day, when her boss Kyle Sterling walks in, To Emmy’s chagrin he spots her and comes over to share a drink. Soon they’re both falling down drunk and rather than drink and drive, Emmy invites him to dry out at her apartment...Well one thing leads to another and Kyle and Emmy get down and dirty on Emmy's living room sofa.  

Now it’s always a bad idea to sleep with your boss and there are a few things you need to know about Kyle: 

He's Handsome a

he’s Wealthy a

he has a fiancee a big

Emmy goes into this Illicit affair with her eyes wide open, which proves what a hot mess she is. She knows it wrong, she just doesn’t care. Eventually Emmy comes to realize that there’s no future in their relationship, after Kyle makes it clear he has no intentions of leaving his fiancee. Emmy reluctantly breaks off the relationship.

Enter Luke Kessler another attorney at the law firm, he’s smitten with Emmy and they’ve had a couple of lunch dates in the past. But, now Emmy decides to give Luke a chance, being completely honest she tells Luke that she just broke off a relationship with a man that she knew was engaged to another woman. Though Luke is somewhat taken aback by this news, he sees Emmy through some serious rose colored glasses, overlooking her many character flaws.

As their relationship grows, Luke is everything you could want in a boyfriend, he’s faithful, honest and he loves Emmy to death. It’s just a shame that Emmy can’t reciprocate, because she’s still stupidly stuck on Kyle! And I'm sad to say, eventually Emmy continues her affair with Kyle, while still seeing Luke!

Of course Luke's no fool and eventually finds out about the affair, but rather than confront Emmy right away, he holds on to hope that Emmy will come to her senses, realize that Kyle’s no good and that he, not Kyle, is the only one that has truly been there for her. But Emmy never sees it and finally Luke has no choice but to confront Emmy.

The confrontation is so heartbreaking! Luke is so hurt and Emmy is completely oblivious, seemingly more concerned that people in the office knew about her affair with Kyle, than the fact that Luke knows. Emmy is such a narcissist! I mean at this point in the book you really hate Emmy! Luke tells Emmy that he’s leaving, that he has asked his family to cut off all contact with her at his request. His final words to Emmy?  “I hope Kyle Sterling rips your heart out of your chest and makes you choke on it!”

And that is exactly what happens to Emmy, she really does get her comeuppance!

I have to say it is the mark of a good writer, who can make you feel any kind of sympathy for Emmy, after the way that she treats Luke. 

Slowly and belatedly Emmy comes to realize that Kyle has many demons, in addition to being a philanderer, he is addicted to drugs and alcohol and while she eventually wises up and leaves Kyle, the emotional and physical abuse he deals Emmy, leaves her a broken woman physically and mentally.

There are many twist and turns in this story as Emmy traverses her road to redemption. Will Luke be there waiting at the crossroads? You do get your happily ever after, but they all go through the meat grinder before getting there!

I’m sure there will be some people who will hate this story, because it deals with cheating, drug abuse and domestic violence. But I found it thoroughly enjoyable, yeah I like the fluff, the Calgon take me away type stories, but I don’t mind stories dealing with dark subject matter either.

On a scale of 1 to 10, I give this book a 9 on the Elsie Meter Rating Scale. This story is well written and the narration by Serena Daniels is excellent!
